About the Submitter: I have always been fascinated by nature, especially birds. I started to draw birds when I was five years old and eventually became quite a serious bird painter. The high point of my career as a bird painter was a series of plates that I did for the 2007 Roberts Birds of South Africa, as well as several stamp series for the SA Post Office. The photography bug only bit me after I visited the Kruger Park as a student with a borrowed SLR. I did not have the money to buy a proper lens then, but I instantly recognised photography as a potential medium for my art. Eventually I saved up to buy a second hand 400mm lens, and after that I was hooked! Together with Albert Froneman I present workshops and host bird and wildlife safaris all over southern Africa.

Many of my photos have been accepted in the then Fuji Getaway Wildlife Awards (earlier the AGFA Wildlife awards) and I was runner-up in the birds section of the competition in 2007. In 2008 one of my images received a highly commended award in the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, and in 2009 I was runner-up in the Animal Behaviour: All other Animals category. In 2008 one of my images was selected as the Avian Image of the Year for the prestigious online gallery BirdPhotographers.Net, as well as the Overall Image of the Year. Another image was selected as runner-up in the avian section the same year. My bird and wildlife images have also been widely published in magazines and books - most notably Africa Birds and Birding, various Random House Struik natural history books, and some calendars.
