Using your Flash with Telephoto Lenses

E-mail Print PDF

Flash ExtenderThe use of flash photography in daytime might sound real awkward to some. Using flash with your telephoto in daytime might be of help and will extend your hours taking photographs. I often use flash with my photography and many are actually very suprised to see me using the flash during day time. Flash photography is not limited to night shots only, but could successfully enhance your daytime photos. As a matter of fact I hardly take any photos after the sun has set, maybe once in a while I do get a nice record shot of a lion or leopard on a kill but beyond that I have never managed to get or seen real nice photos taken at night.

Everest Expedition, April - May 2009

E-mail Print PDF

Hennie by EBCOn 21 April 2009, as our group sat around the dinner table in the Hotel l’Anapurna in Kathmandu on our first night together, we discovered that every person had a unique reason for visiting Everest Base Camp (EBC).  We were twenty people who paid good money to visit the largest and highest rock in the world – Mount Everest, or Sagarmatha as it is known to the locals, official summit height 8,848m.

Petronella said that she came along to look after Hugo, because his mother would never forgive her if something had to happen to him.  Gideon said there was no sinister reason why his wife did not come along, but that reaching Everest Base Camp was in his destiny.   Henning, at 64 the oldest member of our group, came along because Gideon was his Fish River trekking buddy.  Dirk said that EBC was on his bucket list, and Madaleen confessed she came along even though she wasn’t sure where EBC was.  Despite the banter and laughter, there was a noticeable tension – we were going to walk from Lukla, at altitude 2,770m, all the way to EBC at 5,330m and back – a distance of over 170km.  Some in the group were experienced trekkers and three had climbed Kilimanjaro, but most of us had never ascended to that altitude before.

PocketWizard: Ultimate Remote Triggers

E-mail Print PDF

Quick Review

PocketWizard PlusII Almost every field of specialization has leaders, midrange copies, and "also availables". For example, in Photo Editing and Retouching, it's Adobe Photoshop as the Industry Standard, in retouching graphics tablets, Wacom is the "go-to" solution. In remote triggers, that spot is currently held by PocketWizard. I am willing to bet that 9 out of ten professional commercial studios use these as remote triggers.

ODP Safari – A guest Perspective

E-mail Print PDF

Leopard Mafununyane
Our open Land Rover comes to a sudden dusty stop as tracker, guide and photographic host all notice the distinctive white swish of a leopard’s tail behind a small clump of thorny bushes. Moments later the illusive creature emerges from the shadows and slowly skulks across the road no more than a few meters from a mad scurry of guests reaching for an array of different cameras and long lenses. The leopard then does what leopards do best and quickly disappears into what appears to be thick impenetrable riverine bush. “Oh well” I sigh under-breath. With two quick grab shots, one of which seems to be in focus, I am happy. Just like many leopard sightings before this is over all too quickly. Not quite.
