Shooting Polar Bears!

We’re going to shoot some polar bears! At the North Pole........ Next month..... With Heinrich.... The guy from last year. Those were the words I was hearing over a very faint satellite phone connection. In between them I had to scream the “Where?”, “When”, “How” and “Who the hell is Heinrich?”, to make myself heard. Not that such technicalities bother Paul in the least. To tell the truth I found it scary that he even bothered to answer those kind of trivial questions. His mind was set and as far as he was concerned I did not have a choice........ He was right of course. After all it’s Polar Bears! He had another three photographers signed up for the trip and they needed a fifth. If I did not go I would have deprived them all the opportunity! And I’m not a selfish person.

For as long as I can remember, I have always been fascinated by POV (Point-Of-View) photography. Initially I thought the photographers were somehow strapped to unbelievable locations, and using some amazing trickery, but at the end of the day, it's actually a simple thing. Some straps, some clips, a remote trigger or two, and there you have it... Magic!

First and foremost, I want to clear a certain disillusion that has entered people’s minds about HDR. It is in no way some miraculous technique to make a mediocre photo an amazing one ,neither is it the gateway to becoming a great digital landscape photographer. Post processing will always play a minor role in creating great photographs and the effort will always be in the planning and shooting.

It was with much anticipation and excitement that I stopped at OR Tambo International to pick up Andrew Aveley, who had flown in from Knysna to join me for the South African leg of the HANNspree World Superbikes at Kyalami Grand Prix circuit.
Although having covered the local 1000cc superbikes races on numerous occasions, the only real experience I had with shooting these world class riders was when they had their testing session at Kyalami in December last year.
